Keyword Targeting with Domain Names

While this would probably be fitting for my series about improving your search engine rankings, it’s a bit out of order. In any case, something that many, many website owners overlook when they are trying to improve their search engine rankings is the power that redirecting keyword-focused domain names have for their website.

I’ll use a real-world example of what I am talking about. I used to run the website freelanceghostwriter.com, but decided to change direction with my writing services and opened up a freelance writing website with different content rights. Since the ghostwriting website was no longer something that I was using, I redirected the domain name to my new writing website.

If you check out the new website: Pro Content Writer you can see that the words “freelance ghostwriter” or even the term “freelance” nor “ghostwriter” show up anywhere on the page; not in the title or in the website text itself. However, according to Google Rankings, Pro Content Writer ranks #13 for the term “freelance ghostwriter”.

Since I have performed nearly zero off-page optimization for that website (it’s not even officially online yet) – it would be quite amazing to many website owners that I could rank for words that aren’t even on the website itself.

While the phrase itself isn’t too popular with maybe a small handful of searches per day through Google, this clearly demonstrates my point, which is. . . .

Improving your website’s keyword relevancy

…can be as simple as snapping up expired, but keyword-focused domain names and pointing them at your website.

As I stated before, I’ve only seen this benefit in Google’s SERPs, but since Google holds over half of the internet’s search base. . . you can bet your bottom dollar that ranking well in Google is pretty important.

At some point in my series about improving your website’s rankings I may reference this post, but since this topic was on my mind at the time, I thought it well to share this information.
