When the economy is down, home business owners still flourish

Where I live (Michigan, United States) – the economy is deplorable. Not too long ago, I believe, Michigan had the worst unemployment rate in the whole USA; not really something that this state should be proud of. Today it seems that every industry is feeling the effects of the poor economy – the government is still trying to rectify our 1 point something billion dollar deficit of funds for this physical year.

We’ve got prisons shutting down, public services such as police protection are getting scaled down, schools are losing funding and it’s the people of this state who are suffering; teachers, state workers, factory workers, public servants and their children are losing out due to our poor economy. This, in turn, means there is less money being spent elsewhere, which in turn, hurts everybody that depends on their income from this local region.

However, when the economy is poor, it doesn’t really matter where you live – many home business owners escape the negative effects of a poor local economy.

I’ll use myself as an example. I am self-employed and run a number of online businesses, but if I wanted to nail down what I do that brings in the most money at this point, I am a freelance writer and internet marketing consultant. My income comes in from all over the world; I receive payments from people in Canada, India, Spain, Germany, the UK, and even Mexico as well as a few clients that I have in the United States. Even though Michigan has a horrible economy where there are a lot of people suffering because of it; my income isn’t affected by the economic downtime here.

This is exactly the same as with any other home business owner who deals with international customers and customers in other regions of their country; home business owners do not have to suffer when their local economy is down simply because they don’t rely on their local city for their income.

Now, Michigan is not the only state that is suffering financial hardships; the whole country is suffering, in part, due to the mis-use of hundreds of billions of dollars on an unjust war that the current administration forced us into, and I think that the USA is going to feel the effects of this in a very negative way for a long time to come. Now, this is a whole different topic, but I think that it’s important to note because if you are relying on a 9-5 job at a local establishment as your sole means of income. . .the stability of these types of income are dwindling every singe day of the week it seems.

Home based business owners really have an advantage when it comes stability with income. While certainly there may be times when the income may be slow from a home based business, the bottom line is that home business owners do not typically rely on sole stream of income, and they can increase their income exponentially by differentiating what they are currently doing. Hourly wage workers can work more hours to make more money, but they are ultimately limited to a certain income cap per week – and if that is taken away from them. . . they’ve run into a major financial snag that cannot be fixed so easily, especially when their local economy is bad.

Home based businesses come in many different shapes and sizes; you could do what I do, write, or you could put together knick-knacks and sell them on eBay, you could provide some form of consultation in an area that you happen to be an expert in. . . the list really is endless.

In the end it comes down to this: home based business owners have a major advantage over hourly workers simply because they don’t need to feel the “pinch” of the local economy. If you haven’t started your own home based business, maybe it’s time that you think about doing so – even if you’re not looking to be a true “work from home” business owner, you’re only looking for an additional stream of income to supplement what you currently bring in, working from home has a number of benefits; escaping the financial pinch in economic downtimes is only one of them.

Soon I will be offering consultation services on Home Business Profits; I know how difficult it can be to not know where to start or how to get started, and there are so many ways that you can make money from home that it just takes a bit of direction and determination to get you on the right path so that you, too, can make money while working from home.
