PR 0 web directories overcharging for static links

It makes no sense to me at all. I run a directory submission service, so I have the pleasure (and displeasure) of visiting hundreds of these online directories daily. While there is nothing wrong with charging in order to place links on someone else’s website: there should be a motive to get people to pay for this service.

What I don’t get are the PR 0 web directories with almost no traffic (according to Alexa.com) charging $5 to place a link in their general directory. I’m not even talking sponsored listings, just a general listing. What benefit does the webmaster gain for spending the $5? Nothing that I can see.

I’m sure there is a market for an all paid directory, or even many of them. However, if you’re going to charge for a service. . . you should give people something in exchange for their money. If you have no PageRank and you have limited traffic: give away some links for free, give away a useful eBook or tips on SEO, give them something! If you give away something that is beneficial: webmasters will remember & come back for more.
